The EUFORIA project will enhance the modelling capabilities for ITER sized plasmas through the adaptation, optimization and integration of a set of critical applications for edge and core transport modelling targeting different computing paradigms as needed (serial and parallel grid computing and HPC). Deployment of both a grid service and a High Performance Computing services are essential to the project. A novel aspect is the dynamic coupling and integration of codes and applications running on a set of heterogeneous platforms into a single coupled framework through a workflow engine a mechanism needed to provide the necessary level integration in the physics applications. This strongly enhances the integrated modelling capabilities of fusion plasmas and will at the same time provide new computing infrastructure and tools to the fusion community in general.

As can be seen from the list above, the project consists of a set of related work packages. A high level of coordination and monitoring is needed to ensure the timely delivery of the different components and emphasis have been put on providing sufficient management structures and resources at the different levels of the project.

The second phase

The second phase is a standardisation and integration activity and has one technology driven part which develops the technologies and tools to provide user transparent methods for resource allocation and scheduling and dynamic coupling of physics codes and on user and physics driven component where a technology for building complex workflows with the optimized codes as components and standardised data structures and transfer methods are being utilized to expand the physics cases for ITER development. Key components here are the adaptation of a common project wide data structure for edge and core simulations, the adaptation of a workflow orchestration tool and generic tools for data exploration and visualisation. This second part of the project is mainly directed towards providing the means for building a broader user community for the code packages residing on the platform and in the somewhat longer perspective provides the stat for the adaptation of a suite of community operated tools.

The �lessons learned� from the development work done on the fusion codes will be made publicly available and direct user support will be provided to new users bringing their codes to the EUFORIA platform.
